Some journalists get caught up in a slightly misunderstood McLuhan paradigm that, "the medium is the message" (not their fault really, they do go to school).

What really interests me is the literature suggesting negative campaigns work by keeping voters home (ie, an undecided voter is likely to become so disgusted with politics in general, they won't bother to vote), which has implications for narrow casting and when, if ever, progressive candidates can afford to go negative.

JKMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3022298626068206843.post-84322153336519915492010-11-20T18:25:29.460-08:002010-11-20T18:25:29.460-08:00Sidewalk was a terrific idea, fun is always a good...Sidewalk was a terrific idea, fun is always a good idea in politics, n'est pas?Donn Lovetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17616983143267865225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3022298626068206843.post-45036527048666578432010-11-20T09:25:40.526-08:002010-11-20T09:25:40.526-08:00although Nenshi's campaign did do some brillia...although Nenshi's campaign did do some brilliant things that didn't cost much money - writing in purple chalk on the sidewalk outside Starbucks locations was a great idea...if only we'd had teal sidewalk chalk outside Tim's!Scarlett O'Harahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17871266864995765856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3022298626068206843.post-59015888256380458122010-11-20T00:59:30.193-08:002010-11-20T00:59:30.193-08:00Barbara, by Georgia, she got it!Barbara, by Georgia, she got it!Donn Lovetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17616983143267865225noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3022298626068206843.post-20504570198973101442010-11-20T00:57:58.200-08:002010-11-20T00:57:58.200-08:00Evan, we agree and we disagree. However, voter turnout was a result of electing a new Mayor, disenchanted voters and failures to engage by the other major candidates. If we read too much into the social media we will lose the big picture. I would suspect it played a role in getting more young voters out and engaged. And if I'm not mistaken it was Nenshi's ability to suddenly engage those voters which created much of the stir around him, was it not?

Certainly his ability to connect with Calgarians and earn their trust as a bringer of positive change was necessary - I doubt McIver, for example, would have seen hugely different results if he had launched a similar social media campaign - but Nenshi's message of change was largely encompassed by his new-school media methods. I think it's a fair hypothesis to say that social media played a large role in Nenshi's election because it represented a fresh way of thinking that he was then able to tie to his image as a fresh new face for Calgary, but that social media cannot be given all the credit - it had to fit the role.

So I agree that social media alone should not be hailed as the be-all-end-all of campaigning, but that Nenshi was very effective in creating an appropriate role for it.

One young person's opinion,

EGUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15452688504474282994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3022298626068206843.post-57460407551123916742010-11-19T06:56:44.524-08:002010-11-19T06:56:44.524-08:00I agree its not a panacea- but it sure does help t...I agree its not a panacea- but it sure does help to understand how to use it and to understand why it can help. It's first a platform that enables candidates to hear voters. Fortunately, I won't have to sit at the table and watch it happen.Brent Johnerhttp://facebook.com/brentjohnernoreply@blogger.com
